Abstract
On recent high–speed, high–accuracy machine tools, there are more and more cases where a direct drive motor is used to drive a rotary table. By applying a DD motor, a speed reducer mechanism such as a worm gear can be eliminated. As a result, the rotary inertia can be significantly reduced, which is crucial for high–speed, high acceleration operations. The number of assembly parts can be also reduced. Furthermore, since it eliminates many factors to deteriorate the motion accuracy such as the gear backlash, it is effective to reduce the mechanical noise.
