Life cycle engineering aims at rationalizing design and management of total product life cycle for reducing its environmental effects. Development and current status of life cycle engineering are reviewed. Core technology for life cycle engineering is considered from the viewpoint of manufacturing system engineering. Current achievements are evaluated, and future issues are identified, such as integration of reuse concept into product systems.
