Abstract
3-D Surface topography data often contains regions which are required to be ignored upon filtering process in addition to the immeasurable data points and outliers. The principles and characteristics of the Gaussian filter that can be applied to such kind of data are shown in this report. Two simulation datasets each contains sinusoidal flat wave and rectangular ignored region but different in direction by 45 are prepared. The characteristics of the filter are demonstrated to be isotropic by applying it to the mentioned simulation datasets. In addition, it is proved that this filter can be used as a robust filter.
