Abstract
This work applies laser diffraction to monitor tool tip position for on-machine tool measurement. The developed on-machine measurement device dimension was 180 mm×80 mm×86 mm, installable into machining center. In this report, line laser was irradiated to the narrow gap consisting of a high-speed (160,000 min-1) rotational tool edge and a specimen workpiece edge in order to generate a narrow slit Fraunhofer diffraction. We experimentally measured the distance between the rotational tool tip and the workpiece edge by the diffraction pattern; measurement uncertainty was less than 55 nm.
