Abstract
There are few technical papers which discuss the cutting performance for the different types of DLC coatings. In this paper, the cutting performance for aluminum alloys using two types of DLC coating, ta-C and a-C:H, was evaluated. A ball-on-disk friction test and a cutting test were conducted with ta-C, a-C:H and a non-coated cemented carbide. The result of friction test showed that the friction coefficients of DLC films against aluminum alloy A5052 were significantly low compared with that of a non-coated cemented carbide. For the cutting test, the ta-C coated tool showed superior cutting performance compared with that of a-C:H in dry.
