The paper describes the current situation of senior high school students from the author′s experience at the board of education of Kochi prefecture. Inadequate education in mathematics in junior high school has resulted in a lack of interest in this subject and, consequently, a decrease in the number of senior high school graduates entering the science and technology departments of universities. The cooperation between universities and senior high schools is necessary to resolve the problem.

Thermal deformation of workpiece due to grinding heat reduces the dimensional accuracy. In order to estimate the worpiece thermal deformation, it is necessary to understand the temperature distribution in workpiece. In this study, simulation analysis of temperature distribution in workpiece calculated from readily-measurable grinding power is newly proposed. In this analysis, grinding power is estimated from measured electric power of motor that rotates grinding wheel. Grinding force is calculated from estimated grinding power. The grinding heat transferred to workpiece is calculated from estimated grinding energy and temperature distribution in workpiece is analyzed.

Utilization of CFRP for aircrafts is presently advanced because of high-specific strength. The purpose of this study is to obtain the fundamental information for grinding CFRP with high quality by clarifying influences of grinding atmosphere and direction of carbon fiber on the grinding mechanism of CFRP. In this report, effect of grinding atmosphere (dry, wet and liquid nitrogen) on ground surface characteristics is experimentally clarified, analyzing bending strength, surface roughness and so on.

A4-inch Lithium tantalate wafer was fabricated by a grinding process and flatness less than 3µmTTV was achieved. The developed grinding process, which keeps a flat wafer shape and minimizes the crushed layer thickness, could reduce the quantity of material removal and provide better flatness. The grinding wheel showed the coexistence phenomenon of loading and dulling. Therefore, it is important to make a proper selection of a wheel grain and a dressing method.

The purpose of this research is to develop hi-speed and hi-accuracy machining system. The servo data is the set of position command at every servo cycle time, which is minimum unit of position command in NC machining processes. The servo data is directly generated by geometric model interpolation without NC program. In this research the tool path generation system that is able to predict and compensate the tool deflection and fluctuation of cutting load is proposed. This report refers to the error estimation algorithm that is able to calculate the tool deflection easily.

In order to develop the supporting system for process planning in machining of the products in which a large number of cutting tools and machining processes are required, a supporting system for process planning using an algorithm of shortest path problem was proposed in previous reports. The system incorporates various functions such as prevention of interference between the tool and the workpiece resulting from the machining sequence, prevention of processes in which previous machining is invalidated, and integration of processes performed using a same tool. In this report, an analysis of a shortest path in drilling of workpiece having a large number of holes is enabled by applying a greedy algorithm. From the comparison of the machining sequence obtained by using the proposed system and the sequence designed by operators, it is confirmed that the analytical results are valid.

In the manufacturing process, such as a metal press or a die cast, it is not easy to repair and/or modify the molds because the molds are made of hard and heat resisting metals. In this study, we proposed a new type of heat resisting paste of inorganic polymer based composites for repairing the metal structures. The matrix of these composites is inorganic adhesives in which many pores are made as curing with water evaporation. Therefore, to improve the strength of such a porous brittle material, low melting metal particles are mixed is cured. Thermal expansion coefficient of the composite was measured from a room temperature to 600 degrees Celsius. Elastic modulus and strength of the composite specimens are also evaluated by the compressive test and bending test.In the manufacturing process, such as a metal press or a die cast, it is not easy to repair and/or modify the molds because the molds are made of hard and heat resisting metals. In Service Engineering, an extended service cost analysis was proposed to evaluate service functions from the viewpoint of economic costs. However, the difficulties in the identification of entity cost and the specification of cost traceability still remain in the service cost analysis, and thus, the existing method is not necessarily useful for service designer with a very little knowledge of cost accounting. Therefore, this paper proposes the extended classification of service entity costs and the cost analysis table for analyzing the entity costs based on the classification of cost structure proposed in engineering design and cost tables proposed in value engineering.

The small-diameter tool is operated at a high number of revolutions, and it results in high-quality manufacturing with high productivity. Tool breakage occasionally occurs and becomes a serious problem in the field of automated production. The authors have proposed an image acquisition system for the tool that has a CCD camera and a tool projection image processing system to monitor tool behavior during cutting. The tool deflection is measured along two directions by using the monitoring system consisting of two CCD cameras. This monitoring system is connected to the machining center by Ethernet. The constructed system is able to control the machining center on the basis of the measured tool deflection values.
