Abstract
Ti-Al multilayer films can be one of the prospective materials showing self-propagating exothermic reaction ignited with an external electrical spark. In order to study their self-propagating reaction behavior, we have deposited Ti-Al multilayer films with various bilayer thicknesses using a dual source dc magnetron sputtering apparatus. Some of the multilayer films in this work showed self-propagating exothermic reaction as expected. But it was found that the reaction could not be ignited without preheating. A Ti-Al multilayer with a bilayer of Ti : Al =12.5 nm : 37.5 nm showed the lowest preheating temperature for initiation of the reaction.
