Abstract
The purpose of this study is to make clear the grinding mechanism of MGC (Melt-Growth Composites), which is a unidirectional solidification Al2O3/YAG eutectic composite having excellent heat resistance. The crystal orientations of Al2O3 and YAG habits of MGC specimen are identified by EBSD, and the effect of anisotropy on grinding characteristics is experimentally investigated, analyzing surface roughness, shape accuracy and grinding force. In addition, ground surface property observed with SEM. As a result, we clarified the peculiar grinding characteristics depending on crystal orientation of single crystal Al2O3.
