Abstract
This study presents newly developed tools with micro grooves on their flank face, with a particular focus on the effect of micro grooves on heat-transfer enhancement, to enhance tool life through efficiently removing cutting heat with coolant. In the experiments of the present study, type 304 stainless steel was turned with low pressure jet coolant using four of the new tools which are different in the directions and depths of the micro grooves. From the experimental results, it was underpinned that the tool life can be enhanced by the micro-grooved tools, depending on the pattern of grooves. Moreover, the impact of the direction and depth of micro grooves was discussed.
