Abstract
Sapphire is a stable material, however, it is known that the sapphire is worn by sliding against a carbon steel. By using this phenomenon, the purpose of this research work is to machine the sapphire with a carbon steel. As to the sapphire machining, there are a lot of research works for polishing. In this study, machining a shape of circular groove was performed as a fundamental experiment of three-dimensional shape. Machined volume and surface roughness of the sapphire was examined in water, sodium hydroxide solution and colloidal silica solution.
