Japanese pantiles called sangawara have spread to various areas in Japan as one component that characterizes Japanese landscape. Modern sangawara pantiles are mass-produced by press machines whose die configurations are considered to be determined by referring to handmade pantiles before mechanization. However, such configurations are protected as industrial secrets by each company and are not well-grounded. In this study, we measured handmade sangawara pantiles that were actually taken from a house in Osaka Prefecture to formulate their keylines.
