Abstract
The enigma of consciousness is one of the most intractable in science, and has been approached from various viewpoints. The advent of the modern imaging technologies such as fMRI and MEG has made it possible to study on an empirical basis the "neural correlates of consciousness" (Crick and Koch 1995). However, there are seemingly insurmountable obstacles such as the "philosophical zombie" problem (Chalmers 1996), which led to claims by some that the "hard problem" of consciousness is insolvable (e.g., the "cognitive closure" argument put forward by McGinn (1999).
