One of the psychological reverse correlation methods, classification image (CI), has been used to reveal observers’ strategies in various perceptual and cognitive tasks. Recently, a new type of CI has been introduced, offering a unique advantage in visualizing our ‘internal representations’ of faces. This paper explains the differences in experimental procedures and benefits between these two types of CI, and reviews studies on face cognition that utilize CIs.
