The Rockwell hardness test is a method by which hardness (a quality characteristic) is evaluated. National hardness standards have been successfully set and standard samples have been produced. The purpose of this study is to make the test more meaningful in an engineering sense by replacing the standard quality characteristic with an evaluation of the indenting deformation process. Parameter design was performed on a combination of the testing conditions and the heat treatment conditions of standard samples of hardness, and it was shown that the deformation process varies with these two conditions. These results can now be used to explore the meaning of the characteristics of materials.
