Abstract
This is a parameter design study on the formulation of cool-feeling plasters. Plasters have been used for a long time as anti-inflammatory and analgestic agents as well as bruise and sprain treatments in orthopedics. The quality of plasters must be evaluated from the pharmacological viewpoints such as antiinflammatory and analgestic functoins. However, cool-feeling is considered to be an important factor to help achieving the pharmacological effects. One of the objectives in this study was to find the relationship between plaster formulation and cool-feeling. Another objective was to compare the difference between the results form consumer feedback and the test results from specialy trainde panelists provided by the manufacturer. Some methods were suggested to narrow down the difference. To quality cooling-feeling, skin surface temperature and skin penetration of cooling agent in the plaster were measured. The study showed cooling agent α contributed the most, and time passage had significant effects. Little relationship between cool-feeling and physical measurements such as skin temperature and cooling agent penetration was observed. Such findings were considered to be useful for the future development of plasters.
