As global cultural exchanges deepen, the status of imported animated films in the Chinese film market has gradually risen. This study takes a sample of 281 imported animated films released in mainland China from 2000 to 2023, using multiple regression analysis to explore key factors influencing their box office performance. The results indicate several factors that significantly positively influence the box office revenue of imported animated films. Firstly, domestic internet word-of-mouth and attention reflect the film’s domestic publicity efforts and audience engagement. Secondly, the director’s market reputation and professional prestige signify audience expectations of the film’s quality. Thirdly, the popularity and influence of the original IP can leverage existing fame to attract potential audiences more easily. Lastly, the cultural soft power level of the film’s country of origin represents the overall strength of its animation film industry. Based on these findings, the study proposes recommendations to further promote the healthy development of China’s imported animated film market. These suggestions aim to enhance the appeal of imported animated films in the Chinese market and achieve sustainable growth.
