Abstract
Trunk deformities, resulting from long-term wheelchair confinement are a common complication for DMD (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) patients.
A study of thirty-four DMD patients analyzing pressure distribution and pulmonary function was conducted.
The following results were noted:
1) Two types of D.M.D. have been established: A) socliosis; B) hyperextended spine.
2) Vital capacities of D.M.D. patients simultaneously decrease with increased age and Swinyard stage. (r = -0.787)
3) Vital capacities of scoliotic type decrease in comparison with hyperextend spine type. Reduced %VC of hyperextended spine type were relative to age (r = -0.9634). Reduced %VC of scoliosis type were relative to age and trunk deformity.
4) Scoliosis type DMD patients exhibit a single supporting pattern of pressure distribution while in the seated position.
5) When compared to healthy subjects of the same age, DMD patients, who have difficulties with sitting balance and posture exhibit unequal weight pressure. This imbalance results in muscular pain and reduced contact on gluteus maximus.
6) Severe scoliosis type DMD patients are unable to relax this high pressure area with lateral flexion of the trunk.
