Purpose: To improve the quality of service in adult daycare facilities, we investigated the reasons why stroke survivors discontinued attending an adult daycare facility specialized in rehabilitation.
Method: The reasons for discontinuation of 114 stroke survivors were reviewed and classified into six categories (improvement, death, admission to a long-term care facility, refusal, hospitalization, others). The differences in the percentage of each category were investigated among the duration of usage years of the adult daycare facility.
Results: Of the 114 individuals, 24, 16, 15, 14, 9, and 36 reported improvement, death, admission to a long-term care facility, refusal, hospitalization, and others, respectively. The most frequent reasons for discontinuation according to duration of usage were refusal, death, improvement and admission to a long-term care facility, refusal, and improvement, which account for <1 year, 1–2 years, 2–3 years and 3–4 years, 4–5 years, and >5years, respectively.
Conclusion: The reasons for discontinuation vary according to the duration of usage of the adult daycare facility. This finding suggests that we should consider changes in mental and physical conditions and living environment of stroke survivors after starting adult daycare specialized in rehabilitation.
