Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between medical interview sheet assessment at 18 months and 3 years old created by Japan Neonatal Follow-up Study Group and development at 6 years old in very low birth weight infants [VLBWI].

Methods: Two hundred and twelve VLBWI and their parent were included in this study. First, we aggregated and analyzed the data of the medical interview sheet assessment for parents carried out when the child was 18 months and 3 years old. Second, we classified the participants into four groups (typically developing [TD], atypically developing [AD] (intelligence quotient < 80), autism spectrum disorder [ASD], and cerebral palsy [CP]) based on the development at the age of 6 years. Finally, we prepared a contingency table for each option on the medical interview sheet and examined the difference in responses ratio and the risk ratio of each group compared with TD group. Furthermore, for the response to the free description column, the frequency of appearance of the word was examined.

Results: In the medical interview sheet assessment at the age of 3 years, high risk ratios were shown in the option of questions concerning cognitive, language and motor function in each group. In addition, the results of the statistical test on the contingency table were significant (p<0.05). In the AD, ASD, and CP group, the response rate to the free description column was high.

Conclusion: The results of medical interview sheet assessment were related to later development, and it was considered to be an important assessment in development follow-up of VLBWI.
