Objective: To examine the construct and predictive validity of the Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS).
Methods: Participants included patients with subacute stroke and hemiparesis. Outcome measures included the TIS, Trunk Control Test, Fugl-Meyer Assessment, Berg Balance Scale, and Functional Independence Measure. Construct validity was examined using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients and predictive validity was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.
Results: The TIS showed moderate to strong correlations with the outcome measures (r=0.58–0.76). ROC analysis revealed a moderate discriminative ability for predicting walking independence at discharge.
Conclusion: The TIS showed good construct validity in Japanese patients with subacute stroke and moderate discriminative ability for predicting walking independence at discharge.
