Abstract
Lipoma of the colon, which was rarely encountered in the past, has been increasing recently. Since the rate of diagnostic accuracy for the disease is not high, a number of patients are subjected to operations that are too radical. In the present study, we report the diagnostic findings from two patients with lipoma of the colon.
The first patient, a 53-year-old male, was diagnosed as having intussusception of the transverse colon by barium enema. Ultrasonography revealed a hyperechoic image of a round-shaped tumor, and partial colectomy involving the tumor was performed. The tumor was diagnosed as lipoma by postoperative pathological examination.
In the second case, an egg-sized tumor was detected in the descending colon of a 44-year-old male by barium enema. The CT value of the tumor was identical with that of the adipose tissue; ultrasonography produced a hyperechoic image of a round-shaped tumor resembling that of the first patient. Based on the above findings, the tumor was diagnosed as lipoma, and locally excised. Postoperative pathological examination confirmed the preoperative diagnosis. accuracy, establishment of a new diagnostic method, greater numbers of cases, and awareness of the presence of this disease by clinicians are essential for implementing this mode of treatment.
