Abstract
A case of calcified true pancreatic cyst, a rare disease, is reported together with a review of the 35 cases reported in Japan.
The patient was a 60-year-old male with cheif complaints of abdominal pain and a tumor at the epigastric region. He had no history of abdominal trauma. An oval, elastic, hard tumor of 10×6cm, with an almost smooth surface, was palpable on the abdomen. In pancreatic function tests, results of the PFD test were normal, and 75 g-OGTT indicated diabetes mellitus (parabolic type). Abdominal roentgenography revealed the shadow of a roundshaped tumor of 7.5×7 cm accompanied with calcification in the epigastric region; plain CT scanning and ultrasonography of the abdomen also revealed a cyst with homogenous calcification in the wall. The cyst was surgically extirpated, and histopathologically diagnosed as true pancreatic cyst.
Of the 35 cases of calcified pancreastic cyst reported in Japan, true pancreatic cyst was found in only five. Since cystectomy or partial pancreatectomy involving the cyst leads to a favorable prognosis in patients with calcified pancreatic true or pseudo-cyst, they are thought to be appropriate surgical procedures for the disease.
