Abstract

Primary cancer of the jejunum is a rare disease, we have much difficulties in diagnosing it preoperatively and the patients with the cancer are commonly operated on for ileus. Ths paper describes a case of primary jejunal cancer with a review of the literature.
A 51-year-old woman with the chief complains of vomiting and a weight-loss (20kg/2 months) presented remarkable emaciation. Upper abdominal series revealed a jejunal carcinoma and emergent operation was carried out. A tumor of extramural growth type (moderately differenciated adenocarcinoma) associating with ulcer was found at the jejunum 5cm distant from the Treitz's band, which presented a whole-circumference stricutre. No distant nor diffuse metastases were found. Regional lymphnodes were excised and duodenojejunostomy was carried out.
Thus if abdominal symptoms do not disappear even though no abnormalities were detected in the stomach, duodenum and large intestine, we should actively examine the small intestine, particularly around Treitz's band or Bauhin' valve to lead to the eraly detection and early operation.
