Abstract
A 31-year-old man visited the hospital because of melena and dizziness. There was no particular medical and personal histories. Anemia with Hb value of 5.1 was revealed, and the patient was urgently admitted. After admission, he had repeated melena and various examinations were performed while he underwent blood transfusion. No abnormality was found in the stomach, duodenum, and large intestine. Abdominal angiography revealed a pooling in the capillary phase of the distal jejunal branch. A diagnosis of angioma of the small intestine was made, leading to an exploratory laparotomy. During surgery a 11×11×7 mm polypoid tumor locating in the jujunum 70 cm from Treiz's ligamant was found, and partial excision of the small intestine was carried out. Intraoperative endoscopic examination of the small intestine showed no otherwise abnormalities. Histopathological examination disclosed that the tumor was inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP). A great number of hypervascularity including large vessels was confirmed. IFP of the small intestine commonly presents with intestinal obstruction, and rarely associates with intestinal bleeding. This rare case as well as a review of the literature is described.
