With a recent progression in hemodialysis regimen for chronic renal failure, the number of patients on longlasting hemodialysis has remarkably increased. Under this background factor some patients in such situation undergoing operation for a cardiovascular lesion have come into appearing in the literature. However, case reports on surgery for peripheral lesions are still few and there exist many problems including surgical procedures. In this paper surgical outcomes in 9 cases of arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO) of the lower extremities on chronic hemodialysis are studied.
1. Since the disease is associated with remarkable calcification in the arteries, A.P.I. does not necessalily reflect the degree of ischemia of the lower extrities.
2. Upon operation we should carefully evaluate the degree of caicification of the arteries by preoperative contrast studies as well as simple X-ray examination of the lower extremities, and then should select operative procedure, determine the site to be anastomosed, and devise methods of hemostasis and anastomosis. These strategies will ensure us successful operation.
