RESEARCH ON FACTORS TO GOVERN DAMAGE SEVERITY OF RIVER LEVEES AFTER THE TSUNAMI ATTACK CAUSED BY THE 2011 OFF THE PACIFIC COAST OF TOHOKU EARTHQUAKE

Abstract

Authors surveyed damage to river levees caused by tsunami triggered by the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake. In this paper, characteristics of tsunami run-up and external force acting river levees during tsunami run- up were considered based on on-site survey, tsunami run-up simulation result, and aerial photos and so on. As a result, it was recognized that water cushion in land area would decrease damage of river levee by overtopping from river channel.
