The composition of river levee and foundation ground is generally complicated, so the estimation of safety for slope failure due to seepage of floodwaters through levee body is difficult. Therefore, various types of optical fiber sensor have been developed to detect a sign of levee failure. The optical fiber strain sensor in them measures the deformation inside the levee body in strain.
In this study, the applicability of V-type and Line-type optical fiber strain sensors selected from them was verified by using full-scale model tests. Height of the model levees is 2m, and width is 10m. Close-sectional shape was modeled as half of a real levee. The model levees were constructed by sand and sandy soil, respectively.
In the experiments, when the water level in back face of the model levee was raised, the lower part of its slope was distorted. As a result of tests, it was confirmed that two types of optical fiber sensor could successfully detect a sign of levee failure from seepage.
