Abstract
We conducted a questionnaire survey to 1253 university students from eight national, public and private
universities in Japan regarding their awareness of natural disasters. For comparison by area, these undergraduates are subdivided into five prefectures; that is Tokyo Metropolis, Osaka, Hyogo, Hiroshima, and Yamaguchi prefectures. Using data on their responses in this survey, we compared and examined differences between the first-year students who did not study disaster prevention education at the universities from view of their place of origin. We found that students feel scared of earthquakes regardless of their place of origin. Also, we point out the proportion of the students who are highly aware of disaster prevention is around one quarter and there is no difference among the prefectures. Finally, the authors insist that a significant difference does not caused by only the student’s experience of disaster, but also the result of their disaster prevention education in each prefecture.
