Abstract
In order to investigate the actual situation regarding earthquake disaster prevention education in Kobe
City, which experienced the Southern Hyogo Prefecture Earthquake, we conducted an awareness
survey of municipal junior high school teachers in Kobe City. The survey covered 16 items, including
subject areas, experience in teaching disaster education, knowledge of past Nankai Trough
earthquakes and tsunamis, content of knowledge of anticipated future Nankai Trough earthquakes and
tsunamis, experience in teaching Nankai Trough earthquakes and tsunamis, and desires and methods
for support from experts in teaching about Nankai Trough earthquakes and tsunamis. The results of
the survey revealed that there were differences in awareness among teacher age, science teachers and
non-science teachers, and that knowledge of Nankai Trough earthquakes and tsunamis was limited.
