History of innovation in electromagnetic methods of material treatment is reviewed. The milestones and key drivers of innovation in magnetic separation are identified and successes and failures of implementation of novel ideas are outlined. Derailers that were responsible for the implementation failures were identified. The role of research and development in innovation in mining and mineral processing firms is discussed.
