Autoregulators, which in common have a butyrolactone skeleton, are widely distributed among Streptomyces. Biosynthetic pathway of one of these autoregulators, virginiae butanolide A, was proposed on the basis of isotope labeled precursors incorporation experiments.
The identification of the receptor protein for butyrolactone autoregulators in Streptomyces virginiae and its purification, characterization and cloning are also reviewed.
