Large amount of gravel is sometimes used in compacted soils. Special compaction tests are recommended1, 2) to determine the maximum dry density of the total material under such condition. Such tests are time consuming and costly, therefore, a general formula for determining densities including oversize perticles is presented in this paper. The proposed formula yields good densities even when the gravel content of the total material is high.
