Ovarian borderline tumor is a heterogeneous group of neoplasms, and its definition and diagnostic criteria vary, depending on type of tumor, although the borderline tumors commonly show biologic behavior intermediate between benign and malignant tumors. Cases of organ-confined tumor show benign clinical course, while there are occasional examples of extraovarian disease with peritoneal spreading and/or lymph node metastasis, and in reality very minor cases are lethal. These facts necessitate appropriate staging, pathologic evaluation, and further search for prognostic factors for optimal management. This short review covers issues on prognostic factors of surface epithelial-stromal tumor from the pathological point of view.
