It is well known that women have dramatic endocrinological changes and several types of climacteric symptoms in the peri-and postmenopausal period. Furthermore, it has been established that menopausal flush is associated with the reduction of estrogen secretion. However, the correlation between other climacteric symptoms (e.g. psychologic or vegetative nerve disturbance) and endocrinological features associated with menopause has been one of the most contentious issues in menopause research.
The endocrinological and symptomatical profiles of 126 women with climacteric symptoms were analyzed. Forty five of the 73 women (61.6%) whose plasma gonadotropin level was within menopausal range had an estradiol level exceeding 25pg/ml. In climacteric women without symptoms, 23 of 65 (35.4%) showed the same endocrinological profile. In the longitudinal study some but not all, perimenopausal women with hypergonadotropinemia displayed climacteric symptoms when estradiol was secreted. Vegetative nerve disturbances predominated in these individuals with climacteric symptoms.
This study demonstrated a peculiar endocrinological profile of hypergonadotropinemia with estradiol secretion that may be correlated with the onset of some climacteric symptoms in the peri-and postmenopausal period.
