Expression of mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (mtSOD) was examined using mouse-rat hybrid clones, H2-8 and H5, that had lost either parental mtDNA species.
Restriction analysis showed that H2-8 contained rat mtDNA only and H5 contained mouse mtDNA only. Zymogram of mtSOD in these hybrid clones suggested that only rat mtSOD was expressed in H2-8 mitochondria, whereas both rat and mouse mtSOD were expressed in H5 mitochondria that contained mouse mitochondrial genome only.
Thus, rat mtSOD can be incorporated into mitochondria with mouse mitochondria genome.
