We investigated the expression of proto-oncogenes during liver regeneration. The expression of c-myc increased 8 fold between 3-6hrs following the increase of c-fos m-RNA 30min after partial hepatectomy. Also, the expression of c-fos was induced in primary culture of hepatocytes by the addition of EGF or the serum obtained from hepatectomized rats, but c-myc m-RNA increased only by the serum after partial hepatectomy. These results suggest that the proto-oncogenes have an important role in the process of liver regeneration.
