Abstract
In the discussion the differences between Mr. Matsuyama, Ms. Yamaguchi and Mr. Ito were clarified. While Mr. Matsuyama pointed out not only the possibility of the 'new mythology', but also its impossibility, Ms. Yamaguchi regarded the philosophy of late Schelling as the realization of his idea of the 'new mythology'. As for the relationship between Hellenism and Christianity they were not of the same mind: Mr. Matsuyama stressed the oriental element in Hellenism embodied by Dionysus, whereas Ms. Yamaguchi argued that the oriental origin of Dionysus was not of importance in Schelling. While Mr. Ito, following Benjamin, stressed the contrast between Fr. Schlegel and Schelling and insisted that Schlegel's theory of 'allegory' was free from the utopianism which had a great influence on Schelling, Mr. Matsuyama and Ms. Yamaguchi saw the similarity between Schlegel and Schelling as for the evaluation of modern literature.
