Objective: To investigate the outcomes and safety of mechanical thrombectomies (MT) in patients aged ≥90.
Methods and Results: Between February 2015 and November 2020, 36 patients aged ≥90 years old who underwent MT for stroke were selected. The mean age was 93. A good functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale (mRS) ≧3 or no change from baseline) was obtained in 33.3% of the participants. The in-hospital mortality was 19.4% of all cases. Successful recanalization [Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction (TICI) grade ≧2b] was confirmed in 66.7% and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhaging was observed in 5.6% of all the cases.
Conclusion: Despite the high mortality and the less frequent favorable outcomes, our data suggest that thrombectomies remain effective and safe for patients aged ≥90.
