An attempt was made to find out the clinical significance of neurological findings and CT findings in eleven patients with thalamic hemorrhage. Effects of continuous ventricular drainage (CVD), evacuation of intraventricular hematoma and V-P shunt were evaluated.
The results obtained were as follows.
1) Five patients in somnolence or stupor were all survived, however six patients in semicoma or deep coma were not survived.
2) The effect of CVD was considered useful in patients who showed deterioration of consciousness, pyramidal signs and absence of light reaction to pupils.
3) The CVD together with evacuation of intraventricular hematoma was considered to be more effective when CT findings revealed massive ventricular hemorrhage.
4) Thalamic hemorrhages in CT findings including absence or presence of ventricular hemorrhage were classified into three types such as thalamic, thalamo-capsular and hypothalamic. Three out of four patients with massive ventricular hemorrhage were semicomatose or deep comatose.
