Abstract
As part of the author’s study of Hemingway’s referring expressions chosen for characters, this paper takes up “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife” from the collection of his short stories In Our Time and analyzes it from the standpoint of linguistic stylistics. At first glance, Hemingway’s referring expressions are simple and unadorned, in keeping with his hard-boiled style. However, they seem to be indispensable to the writer, just like a culinary secret ingredient, in suggesting the psychological relationship between the characters or between the narrator and the characters. This can be seen in “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife” as well, with the writer’s clever choice and arrangement of referring expressions for the doctor and his wife hinting at the psychological friction between them.
