N-n-butyl-1, 2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BBIT), an antimicrobial agent, was examined for contact allergenicity in a modified guinea pig maximization test. BBIT showed weak contact allergenicity by the intradermal injection dose at 5, 000ppm and the challenge dose at 500ppm. For the evaluation of contact allergenicity, the data obtained from doses higher than 500ppm of BBIT for elicitation could not be used because of its irritation to skin. Even at the highest intradermal dose of BBIT (5, 000ppm), only 40% of animals showed a positive skin reaction to the challenge patch with BBIT at 500ppm. Elicitation of 1, 2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT) at 5, 000ppm produced dermal reaction on the guinea pigs sensitized with 5, 000ppm BBIT. Animals sensitized with BBIT seemed to have weak cross-reactivity to BIT, because only one of 10 animals sensitized with 5, 000ppm BBIT showed dermal reaction to topical challenge with BIT.
