Flame retardant technology of polycarbonate (PC) using by silicone which has excellent recycle-ability and contains no toxic compounds has been developed. However, the flame retardancy of PC alloys by silicone has been difficult because low flame retardant polymers are generally blended to PC. The flame retardancy and the thermal decomposition behavior of some PC alloys were measured and the PC alloys that were able to be highly flame retardant were selected. Furthermore, the flame retardancy of PC/ABS alloys with polycarbonate-polydimethylsiloxane (PC-PDMS) block copolymer with dimethylsiloxane (DMS) unit 40 was investigated. The PC-PDMS block copolymer had the effective PDMS dispersion for flame retardancy of PC alloys, and when the initial thermal loss temperature of ABS was close to that of PC, the flame retardancy of PC/ABS alloy by PC-PDMS block copolymer increased.
