Abstract

In the LSI (Large-Scale Integration) plant the production procedure is very individualistic due to its cycle containing hundreds of long processes that must be circulated numerous times. Its work process is so complicated that it is very difficult to manage its production flow compared with that of other industries. In their golden age, before the early 1990’s, Japanese IDMs (Integrated Device Manufacturers) developed production management information systems themselves and determined a method or way in which to conquer these problems. Those things could therefore be thought of as one of the barriers to entry of the IC (specifically LSI) industry. In the latter half of the 1990’s, the appearance and spread of the semiconductor MES (Manufacturing Execution System) software, especially overseas, may have become a trigger for success for the newly established Taiwanese foundries, their new business model causing great leaps of amelioration. To deepen this discussion it is necessary to know the particularity in managing the work progress in the LSI plant, especially before the semiconductor MES software appeared and spread. However, these particularities are so difficult to concretely express that it seems they are not well known throughout the world. In this paper I would like to reveal the particularity, complexity and difficulty regarding the production control in the LSI plant in the days of their golden age, thus making it the foundation for further debate.
