Abstract

In many applications of earthquake engineering, response to earthquakes are estimated attributing to specific sites and scenarios as they are invaluable for design as well as redesign purposes. Development of seismic acclerograms, which are widely used for the mentioned purpose needs to satisfy the requirements of demand from probabilistic hazard as well as regional characteristics through the frequency content in the soil.

This is a working paper which discusses the development of a methodology to generate spectrum consistent earthquake design input motion using a database of strong ground motions. The database used is based on the sensors buried at different depths at various locations in Tokyo for 40 years by Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. and the source parameters from Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Also, the local site conditions obtained from borehole data are substantiated to this database.

We have described the use of three methods the development of a target response spectrum. Using existing design accelerogram prescribed, deterministic hazard and probabilistic hazard. In all the methods, the geotechnical site characteristics are incorporated while convolution and deconvolution using an equivalent linear ground motion analysis tool called DYNEQ. The target accelerograms have been translated from target response spectrums using Ohsaki Method.
