Abstract

The epidermal cells of Arabidopsis leaves have a complex set of borders that form a jigsaw puzzle-like pattern as they grow. In this paper, we consider its application to joints in wooden buildings and conduct simple tensile tests to compare its strength and characteristics with those of traditional joints. As a result, the curve applied showed certain strength and ductility as a joint. It may be possible to achieve certain toughness for this type of joints not only in the tensile loading but also in any directions of loading by using such “jigsaw patterns”.
