An improved deactivation protocol is developed from the standard protocol to prepare simulated equilibrium catalysts to evaluate commercial catalysts from various manufactures. The cracking and regeneration temperatures for improved method were 675 and 730 °C and the regeneration and stripping duration were 2600 and 600 seconds. All the equilibrated catalysts were characterized by XRD, N2 ads-des, ICP-OES, HR-SEM, HR-TEM and FTIR-pyridine. Catalytic performance of equilibrated catalysts prepared by both standard and improved methods was evaluated using TAKRRER atmospheric residue as feed at ACE unit under the conditions mimicking refinery operations. It was found that equilibrium catalysts, CAT-A, CAT-B, CAT-C and CAT-D prepared from improved method reached 79% conversion at the cat/oil of 5.85, 4.03, 4.40, 4.95 against 9.54, 8.54, 9.93, 11.59 for standard method catalysts.
