Abstract

“Natural Cleaning” which utilizes natural materials like food ingredients for cleaners is spreading over some consumers. But some unscientific parts are seemed to be included in the information. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the tendency of the information about cleaning with beer as one of alcohol beverages and to verify the contents experimentally. In the information, it is said that the cleaning with beer is effective to remove oily soil and the detergency is caused by alcohol, vitamin, enzyme, protein and so on. Experimental results show that the detergency with beer is greater than that with water, but smaller than that with SDS. The most remarkable point is that cleaning effect with beer is equal to or greater than that with Japanese sake or whisky whose alcoholic concentrations are higher than that of beer. It was indicated that the detergency with beer was caused by joint effect of alcohol and protein, and the main popular vitamin theory for the detergency of cleaning with beer was absolutely denied.
