The crack pattern produced by etching the electro-plated porous chromium on steel plate varies considerably with the composition and temperature of the bath and the current density. The effect of the above variables on the crack pattern were investigated experimentally under various plating conditions. The results are as follows:
i) The plateau size and width of crack increase with a rise of temperature of the bath.
ii) Generally, the plateau size decreases with an increase of the current density.
iii) The plateau size increases with an increase of the concentration of chromic acid in the bath, but decreases with an increase of the concentration of sulfuric acid.
iv) The iron ion in the bath makes the crack pattern uneven and not clear.
