Abstract
The study is related to the factors affecting on wear resistance of cast iron. Characteristics and tendency of wear resistance on cast iron of high toughness were examined. Then, comparison of wear resistance of different cast irons and indispensable conditions of wear resistance were explained by the results obtained as follows:
1) The cast iron having high wear resistance was under the following two conditions.
a) Wear loss during initial and stationary period was small.
b) Durable for wear under high pressure or high speed.
2) According to the above conditions, the method of determining wear resistance was established.
3) Typical factors affecting on wear resistance of cast iron were as follows:
a) Matrix and graphite structure, b) Mechanical strength,
c) Residual stress, d) Alloying element, etc.
Most of these factors had similar effects between dry and lubricating sliding wears. However, in graphite structure the effects between the two were not the same, when the amount, of graphite deposit increased. In dry wear, wear resistance was improved owing to the lubricating property of graphite itself, but mechanical breaking and high temperature rupture were easy to hppen. While, in lubricating wear, wear resistance was improved owing to the absorption of lubricating oil and protection of oil film by graphite.
