The pitting and protection potentials for pure gallium in 0.5N NaCl solutions (pH=4, 6, 8, 10 and 12) were investigated by means of an apparatus consisting of a potentiostat and a high sensitive recorder. The results obtained were as follows:
(1) The pitting and protection potential for gallium in 0.5N NaCl solution (pH=4) was -0.30V (S.C.E.) and -0.753V (S.C.E.), respectively.
(2) The pitting and protection potential for gallium in 0.5N NaCl solution (pH=6) was -0.48V (S.C.E.) and -0.730V (S.C.E.), respectively.
(3) The pitting and protection potential for gallium in 0.5N NaCl solution (pH=8) was -0.45V (S.C.E.) and -0.720V (S.C.E.), respectively.
(4) The pitting and protection potential for gallium in 0.5N NaCl solution (pH=10) was -0.56V (S.C.E.) and -0.734V (S.C.E.), respectively.
(5) The pitting and protection potential for gallium in 0.5N NaCl solution (pH=12) was -0.26V (S.C.E.) and -0.922V (S.C.E.), respectively.
